Microchip’s Adaptec® SmartRAID 4300 series of NVMe® RAID storage accelerators was introduced in August 2025 to address fundamental scalability, performance, and architectural challenges facing modern NVMe storage deployments in enterprise and data center environments. As CPU performance, PCIe® bandwidth, and NVMe SSD capabilities continue to advance, traditional in line RAID architectures increasingly become a bottleneck. The SmartRAID 4300 series introduces a software defined, disaggregated RAID approach that aligns RAID acceleration with CPU attached NVMe designs and next generation PCIe Gen 4 and Gen 5 server platforms.
Unlike conventional RAID adapters that sit directly in the I/O data path, the SmartRAID 4300 separates storage software and hardware functions to optimize data flow efficiency. Smart Storage software operates on the host, allowing I/O traffic to move directly between the CPU and NVMe SSD endpoints at native PCIe speeds. Parity based redundancy and RAID calculations are offloaded to dedicated accelerator hardware, reducing host CPU overhead while avoiding the throughput limitations of a single PCIe card endpoint. This architecture enables RAID performance to scale with system resources rather than being constrained by the RAID adapter itself.
The SmartRAID 4300 series supports environments with high NVMe device counts and demanding workloads such as AI infrastructure, data analytics, virtualization, and enterprise databases. A single accelerator can manage up to 32 CPU attached NVMe devices, each with a discrete x4 PCIe connection, and support up to 64 logical drives or RAID arrays. The platform uses a 16 lane PCIe Gen 4 host interface in a low profile HHHL (MD2) form factor, enabling deployment in dense server designs while maintaining compatibility with modern PCIe topologies. Performance scales with the host CPU, interconnect, and NVMe endpoints, allowing system architects to fully utilize high bandwidth NVMe storage without introducing traditional PCIe bottlenecks.
Enterprise class RAID functionality is integrated into the SmartRAID 4300 series to support production storage deployments. Supported RAID levels include RAID 0, 1, 10, 5, 6, 50, and 60, along with advanced capabilities such as online capacity expansion, background initialization, configurable stripe sizes, and bootable RAID arrays via UEFI BIOS. The platform supports both native 4K and 512 byte NVMe sector formats and provides hot plug support for NVMe drives, as well as flexible hot spare options including global, dedicated, and pooled spares with copyback. These features enable system integrators and end users to balance performance, capacity utilization, and data protection based on application requirements.
Security is a key design focus of the SmartRAID 4300 architecture, reflecting the needs of enterprise and data center environments where data integrity and platform trust are critical. The accelerator incorporates a hardware root of trust to support secure boot, secure firmware update, and platform attestation. Self Encrypting Drive (SED) support enables encryption of data at rest without adding host CPU burden. Together, these capabilities provide layered protection across firmware, hardware, and storage media, supporting modern security models and supply chain trust initiatives.
To simplify deployment and lifecycle management, the SmartRAID 4300 series is supported by a comprehensive set of configuration and management tools. The Adaptec maxView™ Storage Manager provides an HTML5 based web interface for local and remote administration, complemented by the ARCCONF command line interface, including UEFI shell support. These tools enable in band management through standard desktop and mobile browsers and maintain compatibility with existing Adaptec storage deployments. For out of band management, the platform supports Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) standards, including Platform Level Data Model (PLDM) and Redfish® Device Enablement (RDE) over MCTP, allowing integration with Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) infrastructures commonly used in enterprise servers.
The SmartRAID 4300 series is engineered for reliability and efficient operation in continuous duty environments. Typical power consumption is approximately 20.75 watts, supporting dense system configurations without excessive thermal or power overhead. The platform is rated for a mean time between failures (MTBF) of 3.0 million hours when measured at 40°C and complies with major global regulatory and environmental standards, including CE, FCC, UL, and RoHS. Broad operating system support across Microsoft® Windows® Server and leading enterprise Linux distributions further simplifies system qualification and deployment.
By rethinking how RAID functionality is delivered in NVMe based systems, the Adaptec SmartRAID 4300 series provides a scalable and future ready storage acceleration solution for modern computing platforms. Its disaggregated software defined architecture removes traditional PCIe limitations, enables high density NVMe configurations, and delivers enterprise class RAID, security, and management capabilities aligned with current and next generation data center designs.
